B8fish,

Lake Manatee is in Bradenton, I think off St. Hwy. 64. Myakka State Park is just outside of Sarasota on St. Hwy. 72. I do know about the Myakka River but not sure about a lake there at the state park so he must be talking about Lake Manatee that is further up. It is illegal to use an engine on Lake Manatee since Bradenton gets its water from the lake but I think electric trolling motors might be legal. I have not fished either spot but I know where they are.

Ah. Okay. I thought Lake Manatee had prohibited engines since Bradenton gets its water from that lake. They must have eased the restrictions.

Yep. I just pulled up the regs for that lake.

Upper Myakka Lake has, um, sucked for a number of years because of management's attempt to return the lake and park to its natural state. So, there are no weeds in the lake and fishing has gone in the dumper.

Fishing in the river was good until about two years ago, but has suffered since.

Don't know about the lower lake. You have to walk or kayak or canoe to the lower lake.

The recent rains have helped bring up the water level some on the lakes here but we are a long way off yet to getting the water back up to normal levels. Lakes like Istokpoga (many in the town of Lake Placid like Lake Childs and Lake June also) that are fed by a water source are in better condition. I have been told that Lake Arbuckle is the lake where all the problem gators for Highlands County are put but I've also heard that there is still good fishing on that lake. I have fished Lake Istokpoga many times but I have not ever fished Lake Arbuckle other than fishing Arbuckle Creek.
