Default Lake Hachenenha - 10/4

Caught about 19, kept around a dozen. Fished 4 to 7 foot of water with jigs of various colors. Most success on small Pink head / Red 'sparkly' hair jigs. Overcast, but mostly sunny with a moderate breeze.

Got up kinda early to get bait, but the store we normally get bait from wasn't open when we got there. Waited until 7 (about 45 minutes) and the owner did not show. I am not sure, but I would have sworn we got bait from the Chain or Lakes Bait Shop (In Dundee) on Sunday morning before. I hope the owner is ok.

As we are putting in a guy with an 18' aluminum boat rigged for specs was also putting in. He was planning on fishing with just jigs, so this boosted our morale.

We decided to press on to the lake with no minnows and just fish jigs. Fished for a few hours and caught nothing but a little tiny dink. We played with the depth we were running the jigs and lure colors a little. We ended up fishing 8 poles with no 2 colors or depths the same.

Finally we got near the old fella we ran into when putting in and he was slaying them. This of course caused a little fisherman's envy, as we could not see a huge difference in our approaches.

We boosted our speed on the troll, and that was it. We started landing fish. Caught pretty steady for the next 2 hours. As we were putting up we kept landing fish, so there was definitely more to be caught.

Best we can figure, we were going to slow, fishing the wrong depths, and missing the main feed time. With the full moon last night the big bite seemed later in the day.

We caught more fish when the sun peaked through the clouds too.

I started with junebug/chartreuse curly tail southern pro jigs, and kept swapping out every 30 minutes or so on one of my 4 poles. A curly tail firetiger Green/chartreuse body w/ Orange tail produce the only fish. I had bought some pink head w/ red and sparkly hair jigs quite a while back. I put two of those on. About this time we boosted the trolling speed. Picked up a few nice slabs on those jigs almost immediately.

I ended the day fishing two firetiger curly tail grubs at 7' and two pink/red hair jigs at 4 1/2' and catching fish on both.

My father in law on the other end caught fish on a red/green tube jig, and a chartreuse head with white tube body blakemore. He also had out a green on chartreuse that caught a few.

The ole boy who was slaying them had about 10 lines out, and had spinners, jigs, and grubs of different colors and depths. Two long lines out the back, and a spread of cane poles with different jigs out the sides. He did seem to troll briskly as well.

Funky pink/red lure. According to the manufacturer it is pink with pink flash.

Sorrento Bait and Tackle: Ron's Fish Bite #406

I have some in other colors too, so I will likely give them all a try. Ron's Tacklebox in Lake Alfred has a pretty decent selection.

Here are the southern pro grubs i was using.

Southern Pro Tackle :: Product Showcase - Hot Grubs

I used firetiger with some success, junebug chartreuse and jawbreaker with little success.

I got mine in bulk from some person on ebay at a reasonable price.

I do not have the HG15 green/yellow but it looks like a good color.

Good report! I hope to be in that area for most of the winter...close to
Lake Marion. Have you ever caught crappie there, Ben?

It has been a few years since we fished Marion. May go check it out though.

Check the fishing reports at The Lakeland Ledger. They give ok reports on the various areas around Polk County, though, to be honest, some of the shop owners who report in seem overly optimistic.
