    Default How about dumb luck

I started this trip salmon fishing with a non fishing friend to see if we could land a few. Really all I wanted to do, was get my friend into a salmon or two and catch just one more to fill my smoker.
Every year I get a mess of salmon to smoke up. Then I take them up to the American Legion and give them away to the members. They like the treat every year. Story? OK>

Well we got up the river to my favorite hole and we cast, and we cast and we cast, nothing. We've had a ton of rain and the river was all screwed up so the catching was nill.
I really didn't want to ruin my friends trip and keep him out too long, so we headed back to the launch.
Now I'm just up on plane going threw a spot in the river thats about three feet deep, and I hit something. It was strange,, I'd never hit anything in that stretch before. MY buddy looked at me and later said, "you had a dumb look on your face".
Well he looked back up the river and shouted "YOU HIT A FRICKIN FISH!!" I looked back and sure enough,,, there was a great big tail sticking out of the water.
I turned the boat around to go see how bad I destroyed the thing and it was still trying to swim and not very well at that. I could see that the fish was bleeding out of the head pretty good, so I netted it.
    This is what I found.

    First prop hit.

This is one heck of a way to show a beginner how to get fish,,,,,,,, but at least I got my smoker filled.
Never even waisted a ounce of meat!!!

    Lucky hit.

Something similar happened to me and a fishing buddy on Lake Toho in central Florida. We went hauling across the lake at night to do some night bass fishing. We were out in the middle when we hit something so hard it kicked the motor up and damn near tossed us on the deck.

Micky thought we had hit a log and stopped to check the motor. We looked back in the moonlight, and the "log" was thrashing around on the surface. We did not get real close but that gator looked to be about 12 feet long.

That is a King Salmon or also called a Chinook Salmon.

Must be rough having good fresh salmon to fish for locally. Love the taste of a good baked or grilled salmon. While not orthadox, it did the job... congrats.
