Gar on rope

I remember as a kid growing up on the Wabash river people would catch gar on a hunk of rope. They unravelled the end to resemble a marabou jig. The gar would get it's teeth caught in the frayed end. I don't remember how they rigged the line tie end though. Anybody ever try that?

Take a 6"-8" piece of twisted nylon 3/8" rope and put on an O-ring (the ones that holds a hook onto a lure) with a small zip tie in the middle of the rope. Unravel both ends and brush the nylon out with a hair brush. Attach to fishing line at the O-ring.

Saw a article recently where someone did about what gabowman did then added a bullet weight above that, then a spinner blade above that looked like it would be fun!

There's a guy on Lake Lanier who fishes for gar with this type lure.

Pretty neat stuff, I've thought about making something like that but would add at least a big single hook to it just in case a big ole hybrid or striper decided to play.

I'd never heard of that, but the proof was right there in the pics! Either way though, I think I'd rather catch just about anything else but them! LOL Thanks for the site! It was interesting.

Like most so-called "rough fish", gar don't have a great reputation. I've never caught one, but they get big and they fight hard, from what I hear.

O'Neill Williams had the Lanier guy on his show, and they fished for gar. It looked like fun. The fish hit hard and tail-walked on the surface like a tarpon.

I've been catching crappie shallow right after daylight lately and the gar have been giving my minnows the devil during that time. Getting bit by them every time I go but usually theyre cutting my line. Here's a 3 & 1/2 footer I caught last Saturday on a 12' crappie pole with light line and an ultralight spincast reel. It was fun to say the least.
