Thread: Reohstat on a 5 speed ?

Does anyone know if it's possible to hook a rheostat dial on a 5 speed,cable steer trolling motor to dial in continous speed? Hook into the speed control on the foot control maybe. Canepole, anybody?

You could but it would not last very long. Burn up rheostat and TM. Mite use a Powerstat but they are real big 1.5 to 2 foot diameter.
That's why I started hunting for a Maximizer for my old TM. I found a new one in the box on E-bay for $200.

I would check ebay from time to time for a "Minkota Maximizer". You will be lucky to find one of these. But to answer your question, yes I have seen it done. If you want to call me for more info send PM. It is kinda hard for me to explain.

To answer your question, yes. However like already mentioned it would have to be so big it wouldn't be practical. If you are handy with electronics you could build your own.

Wow I didn't realize it would have to be that big physically, is there some over device I could use, that is compact simular to a light dimmer knob or some such as that? No IBNFSN I'm not up to par electronics,just a ol mechanic, but one of my partners is a aircraft electronics man. I guess what I 'm asking is there a cheap way to make a compact maximiser.

Making your own is about as cheap as you are going to get unless you can find a good buy on a Maximizer on E-bay. They go fast.

Here are a few robot speed controls that will do the trick. Little pricey, but I know they work. They have to be waterproofed.

If you have a small TM. Some roberters have used the smaller speed controls for the electric scooters. They have to be waterproofed too. Bout 50 bucks on ebay. Too bad you don't live closer this way. House down the street from me for sale...

Ah thanks guys,those robot jobs look to be what I'm looking for,trolling motor is a 50 lb pound thrust I'm trying to do this with, have to research the amps on it.

You're probably interested in a foot control, but I noticed in the new BPS Marine catalogue that MG had come out with a super priced variable transom mount. $189 for a 40# model. MK's cheapest variable speed is something like $350. I prefer MK, but I'd have to look hard at the MGs if I were in the market.

Just thought I'd mention it in case you're working with a transom mount model.

Thanks for the info. I would like to have a variable transom mount for 12 ft johnboat. Trolling small lakes, strip pits and watershed lakes.
