My boat had an old Evinrude Scout 12/24 trolling motor. I just bought a 24 volt Maxxum off of a crappie.com member. Picking it up tomorrow. My old motor has a 3 prong plug. Do I just make sure that the wires from the new motor are on the correct prongs. If I leave the receptacle like it is but make sure the Maxxum uses the 24 prong am I OK?
Make sure your batteries are wired in series. Then do your self a big favor and get rid of the old connector and put one of these in. Marinco ConnectPro Plug/Receptacle Kit
You only need 2 wires coming from the batteries to power your new motor.

You will only need two wires from trolling motor batteries. Positive from first battery and negative from second battery. You will then need another cable from negative post of first battery to positive post of second battery. This will make the two wires going up front 24 volt. If your boat has three wires or even four wires going up front there is no need for them with a 24 volt system. Just unhook them. Now all you need is to match the wires from trolling motor to the two from batteries. We just switched one over this week. Very simple to do.
Sounds like it will be an easy task. I didn't know if anything else up front used the 12 v portion. I will unhook the 12v + at the battery and see what happens. I am sure happy to get rid of that mean to use Scout motor for sure.
I used the original 3 prong Marinco plug and everything works fine. Thanks for the come backs.
Be sure your wires are heavy enough to handle the current, my evenrude scout was only a 23 lbs 12 volt ? When I bought it I was told it was a lot larger?
