997 GPS....thumbs down
There is no question the sideimaging feature on these units are tremendously helpful. I love this aspect of the unit. However, after giving it an honest trial period (bought the unit 4 months ago) I have officially decided that the GPS just isnt very good. Ive worked with Lowrance and Garmins for years before I guess I got spoiled because this units GPS just frustrates the daylights out of me. The big thing that seems to irritate me the most is the lag time that is seems to have between real life movements of the boat and the boat icon on the GPS. It is an exercise in patience trying to get on a waypoint do to this. I line up a waypoint and try to hit it but i miss it 70 percent of the time because of the lag time of the icon. Then when I miss the spot I turn around and head back to where I think my spot is and the boat icon is still pointing in the direction in which I was previously going. Its like everything is 5-7 seconds behind and that makes it very hard to quickly get on any waypoint. Im not convinced its as accurate as what im used to either. It seems like my waypoints tend to "float" 15 feet or so each time I go out. Again...with the lowrance or the garmin if you mark it thats where it is. With the humminbird if you mark it...well....its somewhere around that area...maybe. Again....i love every aspect of this unit other than the GPS. I do not regret buying it at all. But surely the folks at humminbird could have done better than this with their GPS. Am I the only one that is stuggling with this problem? I'd like opinions.
