Default Humminbird Update Question

I have a new (just bought last week) 798SI with Navonics. I am trying to update the software and put the update on a SD card then put the card in the unit.
After turning on the unit, there were two questions about updating. Afterwards, it started to update the software. But....

It has been blinking red/orange for the last hour (give or take) with a message that says "Updating to software version 4.700. Do not interrupt this operation!".

Is this normal? It seems that this is taking quite a long time for a software update. How long should it take?

Thanks for the help.

My 798 only took a minute or two. Did you restore "factory defaults" before inserting the card? Also you must download to your desktop & then send to a blank SD card. Also be sure to take your navoinics card out while updating.

Does the 798 have a navonics card? I have the Navonics bundle but the two SD card slots are both open (empty).

Well i decided to let it run all night, just incase it was supposed to take more than 2 hours. Well it was still supposedly trying to update this morning. I tried to turn the unit off before coming to work, but that didnt turn it off either. I guess my only option is to pull the plug on it and try again. Never a good thing to do to hardware.

If anyone else has any comments or suggestions, I am open to any ideas at this point.

Fishinman.

Did you reset your unit back to defauts before you installed. I read that it could lock the unit up and it would have to be returned to the factory to fix.

This just happened to me a few weeks ago. Got in a hurry and forgot to reset the factory defaults. It flashed black and red screen and wouldn't stop. Had to send it back for reprogramming. They had a real good turn around time. Sent it on Wednesday and had it back on the next Tuesday.

The best thing you can do now is to call HB customer service & explain to them-RE your top post- then fully follow their advice. You will most likely have to pack it up,insure it, & send it to them, but they have been quick to return & it will be only way to get it working & retain warrentee.

I find this VERY frustraiting for a piece of equipment that I just spent $1200 on.

Thanks to everyone on the board that has tried to help. I did reset the defaults. Eventually (after running for more than 15hrs) i unplugged the unit. I removed the SD card then plugged in the unit and it seems to work fine still. Maybe there is something wrong with the SD card or the file was corrupted. I might try it again with a new file and a new card. Thanks again.

Keep fishing.

I think you are going in the right direction now. I'd format the SD card then redownload the update from Humminbird and try again.

don't know for sure but seems I read that you need to use a small SD card like 2gb's larger SD cards are not compatible.
