Another tip i read, was if you have low voltage it could effect the installation.

And ditto on what Wannabe said. 2gb or less.

If you paid 1200 you need to take it back and get your money back tell them it keeps messing up .you can find those units brand new for a lot less.. I bought the unit with the Navonics of the enitre U.S. shippied to my door for $1,040 And I was at a humminbird show and they where selling the 997 ( i think, it was the 9 hundered series) for $1,500

Thanks for all the help. It seems that the HB didnt like the "big" 4g card that I was using. I used a smaller card and it only took about 10 seconds for the update to work. Everything seems fine now.

thanks again and happy fishing.

My 997 likes big cards 4 plus & I know somebody using a 4GB card in their 797. That said I'll bet you my 2 cents that it was/is your card reader that didn't like the 4GB CARD. Most older card readers 3plus years cannot read a 4GB card. I know I had to replace mine when I went to 4GB cards. Try to do a download from U puter to card then read card, me betting my 2cents it ain't gonna be there. From what I can tell once a unit goes into download mode it has to finish it or it will kinda crash, go into sleep mode. that's why U never want to lose power during an update. When this happens HB is only one that can do the FIX, good fishing to U let us know thanks

Glad it worked out for ya. That is a scary pucker factor thinking it would have to go back to the factory. Nobody wants to be apart from their toys!

Good fishing.

The size of the SD card is not an issue. Back in 2007 we came out with a software update that allows our units to work with the newer SDHC cards (that go up to 32GB). Since the 798 units did not come out until after 2007 they and all other units produced since than have this same software update. Also there have been others that have used the 2GB and larger SDHC type memory cards and have not had a failure.
The problem you had may have been do to a corrupt downloaded file or even something else on the SD memory card. Whatever it was it was not present when you tried again with a different memory card. Lad to hear that the second memory card worked. Did you download the software update directly from the Humminbird web site to this memory card or did you just copy the update from the file you used with the larger memory card?
