Anything with SI on it will work, I prefer the SI so i can scan the banks.
The mega units are great but pricy.

I like the 9 much better than the 5 . That being said I have the gen 1 model also . I have a friend that says the Garmin unit he has does well also . Best to get in a boat that has one and see for yourself . Crappy 1 showed me his and I had to have one .lol The ability to mark without going to it to mark is awesome . I spend as much time playing with the depth finder as fishing lol I am looking for a 7 to put on trolling motor . Mine are not linked . Not really much need . Tiller steer and drop buoy markers then find up front with smaller unit .

My 9 inch Garmin pics them up very easily. Had a humminbid 5 before, it would do the job. But it's night and day for me.

Is there other units beside the helix that would help me find bream beds?

Yes, I do. But it's just a matter of opinion. Any of the good graphs will find beds. If your transducer is installed correct.
