Default Humminbird Chirp Mega vs. Garmin Echomap Chirp ?

I currently have an HB Helix 9 which was purchased last August, not knowing they were coming out with the chirp Mega. I am a little underwhelmed with the HB Helix 9. Have heard many good things lately about the Garmin Echo Chirp. Trying to figure out which way to go .. Garmin Echomap Chirp or the new HB Chirp Mega.
Just read thread below titled Anybody Else Leary which pertained to this also.
    Thanks.

Post below from Ztpatric using a 73sv with the CV ducer. You might look at those during your decision making process. volfan411 has same unit and ducer and is happy. If you're happy with what you see there then....if not, then decision is easier. I personnally have no knowledge of the Mega, sorry no help on that. Heard a friend speak of it as the greatest thing since sliced bread--but he doesn't have one. Looked at some vids I think. I'm not one to tout the brand I own as best.

You can always try to procure unit w/o ducer and buy the GT if that would make things more comfortable for you. Good luck with it

HB CHIRP MEGA has 1200kHz imaging (DI and SI) which no other brand offers at this time (in the recreational sonar market) ...

Some of the big box stores like Bass pro, Cabelas, etc. have sonars on display set to the demo. mode so people can watch the demo to decide which unit will work for them. They are also many reviews that can be seen on youtube and internet sites also. But there is nothing like finding someone out on the lake that has a sonar you maybe interested in and taking a ride and seeing what the unit actually does and what you can see with it.
Be safe and good luck fishing

I have the HB helix mega 10" and the new Ulterra trolling motor to go with it. The clarity and definition on the unit is awesome. I don't have the second gps puck mounted yet for the spot lock. Currently it keeps me within about5' or so. I am sure that will improve once the second gps is installed. It is awesome to run my trolling motor next to docks while in my drivers seat watching my SI. When I see fish, just spot lock, get up and start fishing. When done, have a comfortable seat again and cruise around more docks until I see another school. I have only had it all for a short time, but I am impressed with it all. Just like anything, there is a learning curve, but pretty easy for a non-tech guy like me to use. I am on LAke Ozark in Mo, if anyone wants to ride along sometime.

I have the 73sv non chirp and have been extremely happy with it. I have not used or been around the Humminbird so I cannot say which is the better unit but the Garmin meets all my needs.

    Garmin is just "OK" ....

This is an Esox family member and a sunken Tug, on Mega SI.

I don't see those kind of images off any Garmin units yet ...

The big thing nobody is mentioning here is mapping. You had better do your homework for your area if you are thinking about Garmin. You are stuck with their maps good or bad at this time. This is especially true if your lakes aren't MaxDef Garmin scanned. Their nomenclature is tricky but if they didn't scan it I would be skeptical. Lake Barkley is my home lake which is a pretty big one for bass people and is supposedly Hd but is dreadful. No way their staff guys are ledge fishing with Garmin maps on Barkley.

All that said though I got into the units cheap and run Lakemaster on my phone when I need it. As far as doing what is necessary to catch crappie sonar wise it is solid and I have owned Hbird core series and spent a fair amount of time in Lowrance boats and don't feel handicapped in the slightest. I guess I am in the minority in that opinion, but I am strictly basing my opinion off the ability of the Si, Di, and sonar giving me the information necessary to catch fish. If your into taking pictures I would say you will be disappointed with the Garmin with either transducer and ought to get the Mega. But I would have to spend some time in the boat with one to see if they improved some things over the core series before I forked over that kind of money.
