    Default Myth or not.

Myth or not. I have always been told to cut fish ID off because it really don't work "fish ID does not show fish". Now I am told that Humminbird's newer software with "FISH ID ALGORITHMS" are better now and fish ID works better now.

Fact. I've found fish ignore my lures whither I know they are there or not.

The "Fish ID algorithms" are based on the idea that the fish's air bladder is one of the most valid and reliable factors in sonar detection of fish ... Most all fresh water fish have air bladders and we know sonar will not travel thru air ...

It stands to reason that the bigger the air bladder = the bigger the fish ...

The previous Fish ID algorithms specified the smallest icon to be a 1lb bass, the medium icon to be a 2lb bass, and the large icon to be a 3lb bass ...

Echoes outside this criteria were not assigned a fish ID icon ...

Interestingly... The new software versions show a walleye looking fish ID icon ...

I haven't heard yet if the new icons also use new algorithms ...

Another point is that the "Salt Water" selections of the "Water Type" menu under the Setup tab change the algorithms to instead assign the respective fish ID icon sizes from larger air bladder type fish species ...

I've found "fish ID" symbols to be a 50/50 conjecture. I've had the symbols come up on my previously owned 2d units, and caught fish at that exact depth/spot ... and had the fish ID symbols appear on the screen when I was in very shallow water, very clear water, and could see that there was NO FISH present. That was one of the major reasons why I used my 2d units to keep track of depth and spot cover, and ignore the "fish" symbols for the most part. And why I prefer Down Image over 2d

One of the reasons I was asking about this is that I notice that the fish symbols don't come up as often on the newer unit as they did on the older units. Is this still the same old technology as the old units or have they came up with better sonar technology. I was hoping that they had finally come up with a fix so that these sonars would not be lying when fish symbol appeared.

I do not know if the algorithms have changed with the new fish icons ...

I use the fish ID symbols on my Piranaha Max 220 sonar unit on the bow. When my wife goes I let her sit up front or I turn the unit so she can see the screen. She gets excited when the fish show on screen. Sometimes we catch fish, sometimes we don't. However, seeing the fish symbols keeps her interested in fishing. She can't read my 899.
