I think the bigger the better. We make our frames 8'x8' mostly and they work very well. When I drive stakes in the bottom I try to make them as big as I can.

CX.

If you fish water that has lots of fishing pressure. I would build several smaller piles or condos verses one large one. Fish here normally only use a small portion of a large pile. The bigger it is the easier it is for others to locate and over fish. I find I get more bang for the buck putting in a lot of small piles or condos. We catch lots of fish by moving from one to another . Not unusal for us to fish as many as 40 spots on one morning. There is always some that have been over looked holding a few good Crappie. This works good here because we have so much fishing pressure, it's terriable around the spawn and holidays or weekends.

Each of the previous posts have their merit ...but I tend to go with bigger is better...as big as is practical to put in boat and transfer into water.

biggest stakebed i have ever helped build was 46 ft long 6 feet wide and used up 600 stakes. BUT where we put it you cant beat it. you can literally move up one side fish the end and turn around and come back down the other and just circle it. The most fish we have ever pulled off of it was a little less than 200 crappie in one day. We didnt keep that many obviously, but we caught that many.
