Thread: Bamboo Crappie Condos

I finally made my Bamboo Crappie Condo post into a page on my website with pictures and a couple more designs we've come up with.

Tomorrow I plan on sinking four of the tall bamboo condo's (12') in a marina boat slip. I plan on setting them on the botton in 24' deep water. Do you think I should hang some cedar or other trees above them or do the fish usually sit in the tops?

Also, I have located a good supply of bamboo. If I cut a lot of it at one time, how long can I keep it before sinking it. Don't want to ruin it.

That should be a pretty good depth and I wouldn't think you would need or want anything over them - might make it hard to fish down to them. I hung some Bucket/Bamboo condos from a dock that was over deeper water. I drilled a hole through the bucket on each side where the handle was attached, ran a rope through both holes and then tied the tag end back to the main line above the bucket and tied the other end off to the dock. Now they can be raised or lowered for different times of year. We try to fish from just above the top of the bamboo to several feet down in the bamboo depending on the time of year and how aggressive the crappie are.

We try to use up the bamboo within a week of cutting it but it probably wouldn't hurt to go longer. It seems like the leaves help attract fish and by the time the leaves fall off there is plenty of algae growing on the limbs so I like to put the condos in the water before the leaves fall off but it probably isn't necessary.

You'll like fishing the boo - won't hardly loose any hooks. I'd check it within a day or two - you'll probably catch crappie off it the next day.

I make my bamboo stands just a little different than that,but i got some really good ideas from your story thanks for sharing

This is right on the money. You can catch Crappie right off of your condo 3 days after you drop them if they are in the right depth. I know the algae will take a while to build but it doesn't matter if they can relate to the structure right off the bat. Go fish 'em man!!!

How long does the bamboo last under the water.

As long as it stays under water it will last a long time. We have condos that have been in the water well over 5-years now and they still hold fish. After about 4-years we occasionally pull a small decaying branch up when we get hung up but it seems to stay flexible and in good shape for several years in Lake Greeson. Your mileage may very.
