Where and When?????
How do you guys choose the right place and time to build your structure????

The right time is any time!
I like to place mine on humps, points, and drop offs close to deep water.
One of the best places to put them is somewhere that you've caught Crappie before but is lacking structure!

I like ledges that go from 5-10ft, points with drop offs and along any creek channel that runs close to the shore. Also find old roadbeds and try to drop them on it.

The lake I frequent and tend to drop stuff in gets drawn down 25 foot in winter. I build the stuff and then wait for the lake to come up to the level I want the cover setting in. This way I don't have to lug it up the bank or drop in water and have no idea whether or not it is actually setting up and not fallen over.
I start out having cover along drops and creek channels in 20 fow so the tops will be in 15-12 for summer crappie (thermocline usually sets up at 15 foot). Then as the water begins to rise in the lake I set the shallower cover at deepest in 8 fow tops at 3-4 on spawning banks.

sounds good for the summer months i put mine in 15fow on drop offs usually good till sept. this seems to be the key depth for summer let me know how it works for you p.s.if you can find a long sloping point in 15-18 fow seems to be the ticket good luck on your tops----

I like Oak and willow in 14-18 foot water. I have caught many in that depth. It is a good post spawn range that will hold fish until first frost. Some of my holes have been trial and error. I have put alot of brush and work in a nice looking bend only to find in a couple of years, it was not productive. So I left it, others I have hit it right on. I have rebrushed those, and kept that spot up. And so, on..... keep putting out brush, and maintain the good, and leave the bad. Right now I currently have about 33 locations at various depths. Its the best insurance you can buy. The harder you work, the luckier you get.
I have spent alot of time building the PVC condos, and in my opinion... they cant hold a candle to natural Oak and willow. The proof in in the pudding. It takes about 2 years for the alage to build up on the PVC to get good numbers on it. I have put out every kind of structure there is, and come to the conclusion to go fishing with an axe, tree saw and a pile of blocks. I set all of my piles out in Dec, and Jan, when its freezing cold, and no one in their right mind would be on the lake. I find dead willow and oak and pull it out to a premarked location. In one afternoon you can make about 2-4 locations. Its a little work but it will last you about 5 years.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
