Thread: depth of cover

I have a small dock, that I would like to put cover under, the issue is the water is 50 feet deep at that spot. If I were to put say a 12 foot tree down as cover, at what depth would be the most benefitial to baitfish? I dont know much about this but from what Ive read you anchor trees with nylon rope and a weight of some form, so I could have the nylon length of rope run up 20 feet if I wanted the structure to be from 20-30 feet down?

Any thoughts/comments welcome.

If your dock is floating, you would need to make sure the weight of the water logged tree and weight of the weight would not sink the dock.

Just my 2 cents worth. Here in AR, there is a lake or 2 that I fish at 54 fow in winter, and catch crappie on bottom. What about just dropping a few condos right off the endof the dock, and under the dock for winter cover?

50 ft of water... man that is deeeeeeep.
I would tie on a weight and about 20 ft of rope in the top of the tree and throw it over... the crappie should suppend over the trees depending on the time of year....
You could sink some trees shallow for some spring fishing too....
Any structure is good holds bait fish and crappie...

Is there current in this lake, specifically by your dock?
If so, that current and 20-30 of rope will push that tree all over the place. Where it finally ends up nobody knows. If you want it to stay put your going to need a ton of weight.

I think your better off building up that cover over time. Every year stick your Christmas tree in a 5 gallon bucket and fill the bucket with concrete, remove bucket, and drop it off the dock. Get all your neighbors trees too.

Or you could stick a 30' tall tree ina 55 gallon barrel and fill the barrel with concrete, push that off the dock and pray it stands up.
