Default Adding structure to a lake with standing timber?

I fish a lake that has a lot of standing timber around the lake. I was thinking of building some structure and sinking it, but wasn't sure how well it will attract crappie with so much other standing timber available. Most of the existing timber is 30+ years old so it's mostly trunks with some bigger main branches still attached. Most of the smaller stuff is long gone with the exception of some still standing cedars. Will this be a waste of time, or will the new structure still be effective?

Also, I plan to use some vinyl siding scraps to make the structure. Do crappie prefer a more vertical type of structure or would I be better trying to build structure with more horizontal limbs?

I've done a good bit of bank fishing. In one area the water was clear enough to see crappie stacked up under horizontal logs. I've tried to measure some logs so the bait drops to just below the log. I've done pretty good around vertical timber too. D-10 has showed some videos of horizontal habitat they made with vinyl and pvc.

With that much big timber, you can supplement it with laydown limbs, 'boo/etc., or Christmas trees around the trunks...and vertical limbs in buckets etc., around others. We have piled Christmas trees in between wood attractors (telephone poles) up to 6 feet deep, they were awesome for 5 yrs and then started decaying and compacting.
I have seen where fish already used to wood will shy away from plastic....Normally plastic does well in a lake like ours that is void of natural cover.

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and built some with scrap vinyl siding I had laying around. I've got some more scrap stuff laying around that I'll make more with later and add to these. If they don't work, I've got no money in these as I had everything laying around. If I can catch a couple fish on these each time out it will be worth the two hours of time I have invested in them.

Not sure why the pic posted sideways, can't seem to find a way to fix it.

Adding pic legs in an "X" will help keep the next 1s upright if snagged. Happy New Years !

we have dropped concrete blocks with bamboo in them along side the standing timber,we make them 10 to 20' in length pending on the depth of water, of course.

I would be very interested to know if these work, as I also have a bunch of scrap vinyl.
