    Default Pond bait fish

Building a new pond and am going to stock it with fat head minnows when it fills up. The pond is about an acre in size and is roughly 15 ft deep. Was curious as to how many bait fish I needed to put in it and how long I should wait until putting in crappie, bass, etc..

Most state fisheries will have some guide lines they can recommend . I would stock with fathead minnows and add brush for them to spawn on . Be good if you could give them one spring /summer to multiply before stocking your fish . Other wise it would take lots more baitfish .

drop some wooden pallets nailed together to form a triangle. This shape provides plenty of surface area for the fatheads to spawn on.

And think through winter if you want to catch bass or bluegill. In March add 20 -50 6" black bass. Key is to put a feeder on the pond. In March start feeding 8 - 16 ounces 2 times per day. Place plenty of wood and rock in for structuy. Hopefully you got advice to place 8-16 " of like down the bottom of your pond????? Like is the key to having a great fishery!!! That will keep plankton growing to feed the minnows!!

Catch and release till the fish are eating size!!! Eat bluegill or bass after you decide which you want to see get big. Fish are from the Bible they are Agriculture/Aquaculture . Enjoy catching and eating your own personal fishery! Nothing better for therapy and bonding with family and friends!! also decide to let your folks to catch and eat some fish!!

I always built the base first and gave it time to prosper. A healthy pond relies on the amount of food that is available. I always went 2 spawns of baitfish before adding the first batch of predators (like Bluegills) which would be the second source of food.
Provide as much cover a possible for the baitfish...Stacked pallets, hardwood laydowns, stacked Milk crates, and other DENSE cover.
