I wanted to hit Buggs or Chick Lake but with the forecast of rain moving into the area I stayed closer to home and paid the NWR (Northwest River) a visit for the first time since June. The bite was slow throughout the day and the vast majority of the crappie I caught were 7"-9" with only one at 11" and this one which went 13" and 1lb 5oz.
This is the first crappie that I have caught that was at or over 1lb since July 6. Since that time I had caught 664 crappie without hitting the 1lb mark. Glad that streak is over.
Most of the crappie today were caught vertical jigging a pearl/chartreuse wasshoppah tipped with a chartreuse crappie nibble. Not a whole lot of luck casting but when I did have some luck, blue/pearl did best. Most crappie were caught 7'-10' down over brush with some as shallow as 4'. The big one was caught 9' down along a channel edge with the pearl/chartreuse wasshoppah.
It rained pretty hard for around 15 minutes. I am always amazed at how many fishermen do not bring rain gear. I showed surface water temp at 71-74.
