On the second leg of a recent trip to the North Woods of Wisconsin we fished the Namakagon Lake area near Cable Wisconsin and I caught a monster. It was pretty cool, we fished with a soft plastic unweighted stick worm, wacky style. I've never fished this way, but I do like it. The worm is heavy, easy to cast and has a very erratic action. And talk about feeling the hit, it's awesome having a big fish hit your line which is comprised of nothing but a small piece of plastic and a hook. Crappie fishermen that like to feel the "thump" can certainly relate.
I know it's not a Crappie, but in the North Woods, if you want to catch anything over two pounds, you pretty much have to switch over to fishing for Bass, Pike or Walleye. Having said that, I have heard of many large 2+ lb Crappie caught up here too. I just think the growing season is not as long as down South so lunker slabs are a little harder to find.
"The Cable Area is known for having the
'best trails in the U.S.' Located in the heart of the
850,000 acre Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest the Cable Area is the mecca for all things trail related. Hiking, mountain bike, ATV, snowmobile, snowshoe and cross country ski trails create an intertwining trail system that is simply awe-inspiring. What makes our trail system truly unique? While many of these trails intersect at some point with another trail, having nearly
1 million acres to play on allows you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Whether riding a snowmobile in January or a bike in June, the scenery is extraordinary and you will swear you are the first person to ever discover this amazing forest."
The Cable Area
There are a ton of lakes to explore in the Cable area. We found plenty of Bass, and even some good eating size Bluegill during our fishing adventures here.
Well, that's more Goldfish sized! lol
My journalist friend and fishing buddy Rebecca McCormick (InviteMeFishing here on the forum). You can see her travels here:
Rebecca McCormick Travel. Always a pleasure fishing with Rebecca, cause she gets so darn excited when she catches a fish. People from all across the lake can hear her, as they did even when she caught that Goldfish sized Bluegill!
We even tried leeches! These bloodsuckers aren't as bad as you might think, and they stay on the hook good too! Easy enough to handle. They don't start sucking your blood till they are latched onto you for a while. They ain't that quick.
Look closely, no wake anywhere within a hundred feet of shore.
There certainly is some beautiful landscape when fishing in the North Woods.
We stayed at
Lakewoods Resort. A gorgeous place with some great views. I have to tell you a story. I was in my room and I hear some hooting going on outside my window. I walked out onto my second story balcony and there was a small tour group at the waters edge trying to call out to a Hoot Owl. I guess there was a Hoot Owl nesting in the area they were trying to catch a glimpse of. I hear them hoot, and I automatically and accidentally hooted back to them. Boy the whole group got so excited and started looking all around. I snuck back in my room and closed the drapes! No they did not see me. Doh, I think I made them stay out there getting eaten by mosquitoes waiting for that Owl for another hour! Oops, don't tell anyone you read this!
Our last meal in the Northwoods was at
Garmisch USA Resort. The place is picturesque. Click on their link and take a look at the pictures there. A German hunting lodge/restaurant/bar.
Rebecca ordered this drink there which had about every vegetable imaginable in it. A meal in a glass! I don't know what the heck it was, but it looked delicious. Salt please!
