    Default Cut bait choice?

Targeting channel, mostly in inpoundments,I'm wondering if creek chubs would make for tasty cut bait.I also would like to preserve them if possible,I'm thinking I could either brine them or just salt them, then freeze them, what say you?

I freeze a few shad and bluegill and minnows etc through the year. I do not freeze them in water...takes to long to thaw. I get the bait out right as I'm going fishing.Thaw a little then put it in a cooler. I may put a little out beside me to thaw just a little if it's still too froze when I am ready...but I want that bait still really cold and firm when I cut it and hook it. Even a little icy is okay because it will thaw quickly the remainder of the way in the water. I am going to have that bait on ice...even cut some and lay it on the top of ice and reach in grab a precut piece as I need it.

    Now just blabbing some

I would rather have live or fresh...but depending on how hard it is to get or how lazy I am I go to the frozen.

Seining a creek for different species...minnow traps...cast nets...sabiki rigs.. use them all at times...and just buy the biggest minnows I can find at times.

Impoundment channel cats can be funny at times...sort of like a human who likes junk food...sometimes key in on something. Chicken livers are good and rooster livers stay on hook good. But stink and dip baits can be good...hot dogs at times....shrimp work real good at times. Night crawlers, leeches, grasshoppers, spring frogs,crawfish...all work at times. These gulp baits will work too sometimes.

Catalpa worms...holy cow... And the guts of a gizzard shad..

I like to fish with live minnows a lot of times especially if I am drift fishing...catch more of a mixed bag of fish that way.

My day of kayak catfishing ended with mixed results,I mostly used cut bait,( chubs, and gills ),I also used night crawlers.I fished under a slip float,in basically a debris field of sunken timber and log jambs. My first cast resulted in a hook up within 20 seconds, problem was it wasn't a catfish,it was an 18" largemouth,it took a large bluegill head on a circle hook .
A bit later,I hooked up with a huge cat ( I never laid eyes on it,) I managed to horse him out of a large log jamb, into some open water, but he wrapped me up in another. After much time,I broke off, this one hit a creek chub/ night crawler combo.I tried some stink bait, but had no luck,I ended up with no cats in the yak,but caught 10 more largemouth of various size, all in all,I can honestly say,I am hooked on catfishing from a kayak........if I could just keep those nasty smelly bass off my bait.

I use cut shad when I can catch them, cut bluegill next. For small channels, it's hard to beat some fiber stink bait though

I use bluegill because I love bluegill fishing. My preferred cut is strip bait. It works well for trolling.

Cut bluegill for channels & live gills for blues or flatheads. Cut chicken breast soaked in fish oil next.

fished the sippi river for years. caught some huge blues and the only bait we ever used was skipjacs. we would go up to pickwick and catch hundreds of them below the dam and freeze them in packs of 6 or8. would last all year...

Their is a bunch of baits that catch few fish .but they are a few baits that catch a lot of fish.fresh shad is hard to beat.and when I cant get that and I'm dropping my line straight down not casting (they want stay on a hook if casted)
I use a pack of cheap hot dogs.cut into 1 1/2"-2" chunks 1/4 cup garlic powder 3-4 drops of red food coloring maybe a tad of water put into a good zip lock bag shake it up good and you got a bait that them cats love.
