Default Late summer / early fall Crappie fun in Nor Cal

Took my nephew out for some bass and crappie fishing on 09/18/2014 before he headed back to college. We were at Black Butte Reservior. The water was very muddy, low, but we managed to bring home a nice batch of crappie and two big channel for dinner. We jigged deep in pods of brush piles. Caught over 40 in 2 hours, but only kept 20 over 10 inches and released the rest to populate. I hooked a beautiful 17" black crappie grandma, probably 1.5 pounds, but released that girl to go make us some more babies. I hope more CA crappie anglers would do this to help keep the crappie population growing. Sadly, crappie is not a very popular sport fish in Cali so DFG and private lakes do not put in the effor to populate and grow them. Had a blast with my nephew.

I like storing my plastics in Gulp Alive juice. Leave them mixed in there forever and has worked just as good as live minnows.

The weather is warming up and I can almost bet the crappies are moving out of the deep and suspended over flats if the water level is the same as last year. Last weeks rain storm did not do much. If the weather keeps warming up, these northern lakes are going to be extrememly low and that means that last years bedding grounds are on land and I will need to spend time rescouting where these crappies are bedding this year.

Just warmed up the boat yesterday, rigged the boat for two pole spider rigging, and debating to go to New Melones, Camanche, or Berryessa.

    Wish me luck!

Nice fish, I heard today that clear lake is producing some crappie right now.

Used to fish it for crappie back in the day. Seems like the population is back up.

Great suggestion with the Gulp Alive. Did you make it out?
