    Default tube jig question

I am fairly new to this. Mostly a bass fisherman, but have caught some Crappie casting road runners and beetle spins. Trying jigs. Question, how do you put a tube jig into the jig? I saw one guy putting it into his mouth to lube it. I tried using "Crappie Honey" as a lube, which seemed to work a little. Still difficult. Also, I read that you can put a nibble into the tube. Could not figure that out. Maybe I am being a dumb@#$ but I need some help, please.

I use bigger tubes than many . I make sure the insert heads I use have no mold lines or burrs . Smooth them down if needed . We use any kind of fish scent or lube if tubes not already lubed . In a pinch spit on the lead , vasoline or mineral oil works . Helps to have done it a lot but we push lead in from open end of tube to insert it then once in press to pop out jig eye the side. They are cheaper using unpainted leads ,work and last better IMO. Draw back is you have to cut off jig to replace the tube . But I like to cut off old knot and retie as it can get weak anyway . You must match jig head size to jig tube for it to do best . I use mainly Southern Pro Umbrella tubes on 1/8 oz jig heads #1 hook . on the bigger tubes 2.5'' I use a 1/4 oz jig head with #1/0 hook . Timmy Tom's jigs makes some of the best jig heads too .

They do make "insert" style jigheads (+/- shaped like a baseball bat) that are specifically made to push inside a hollow tube jig body. But, if you're using ballheads or other shapes, you will need to find a tube they'll fit w/o splitting them open. I don't use hollow tube jigs anymore, myself ... I've gone to using solid body tube jigs and thread them on the jighead.

As for inserting Crappie Nibbles into a hollow tube jig .... yes, it can be done, and is done by those that use them. You can actually purchase a device that's made to do that, or you can use a oral medication syringe and do the same thing. It's a lot handier and easier to use one of those devices, than trying to push the Nibble into the hollow cavity of the tube jig by hand. And it can be done, with either of these devices, when the tube is on or off the jighead. Many people put the Nibbles "inside" the tube, rather than just tipping the hook with it, so they get the attraction benefit of the scent and/or scales ... but don't have various Sunfish species biting the Nibble off the hook on almost every cast. And they don't have to lay the Nibbles out to dry out so they stay on the hook better.

I would like to say that SlabSauce would be another way to go. It would be easier and faster to apply.

Thanks. I am using unpainted tube jigs. Maybe mine have been a snug fit. I eventually get them on but often split the tube.

Yeah... I wish z-man would start making crappie tubes , they would never split and you could catch hundred fish on one.

I use salted hollow tube jigs injected with crappie nibbles and going to use the Slab sauce on them this spring. Being a artificial bait fisherman I feel they give me all the advantages I can get to improve my catch ratio. You can get salted tubes from basspro. Stick them on a road runner and you have the blade action also.

Take care to check for mold flash or burrs on the lead, remove if needed . Sometimes spitting on lead or any lube or fish scent helps insert them . My trip last week I fished all day with same bait . The tubes last longer if you take care removing fish and don't hang it up too much or loose it . Not uncommon for me to catch a limit on one bait . No stopping to push tube back up cause it stays till you tear it up .
