    Default Better Line Counter Reel?

The Daiwa Accudepth series or Okuma Convector series?

Looking to dip my toes into trolling cranks this summer.

Been awhile on this thread. I'll bump it because I wondered the same.
    Maybe someone will see it.

Hands down, Okumas. I have had multiples of both through the years and have had little trouble with the Okumas and numerous issues with the Accudepths. I have changed to 5500LC Abu's in recent years and love, love, love em. I still have some Okumas as backups but have gotten rid of all the Diawas.
Of course, we all have opinions, that's just my experience.

If all you’re going to use them for is crappies, get either one. They’ll both hold up pretty good. Just remember you get what you pay for.

I've got a rather small Ocuma and Daiwa. Got them when Joe's closed down and sold everything off. No idea why as that was a number of years ago and I've never used either one! Both seem like pretty nice reels. And were over 50% off at the sale!

I was looking on the internet last night and Abu Garcia and Shimano make line counter reel also. The reviews on the A G were bad that the plastic gear for the line counter failed after a few times being used. The Shimano price scared me off at $180, you could get 6 Shakespeare ATS for that price. Than there are some other models that I couldn't say their name and couldn't find any info on.

Has anyone had any experience with the ABU digital line counter reels? They're about 2/3 the cost of the 5500LC's.

There's only one way to get a good answer to a question like this, buy one! If the cost is gonna put you in the poor farm, find one less expensive! Then and only then will you really know what you have. If it doesn't work, junk it and try something else. I probably should try the one's I have but have no idea what I'd what I'd use them for? I guess I could take one along and use it to double check the accuracy of my depth finder! :-)

As for buying and trying, you will never catch me buying an expensive reel right off. I go through several of that company's different reels first. I grew up with old Mitchell 300 spinning reels. First level wind was a $15 direct drive Zebco, good reel! But when I found an ABU I already knew it decended from Mitchell and I bought a 5000, lasted me over 50yrs and lost it in a house fire. Have three ABU's today and no doubt in my mind they will out last me! Always wondered about the Diawi Millionaire but not crazy about their spinning reels. So when Joe's went under I found a Millionaire for about $30 and for $30 it was worth trying! Very nice reel. have a Kastking Rover 40 and believe me I'd never buy one just to try, thing was about $40 with free shipping. But some guy was really badmouthing it so for $40 and free shipping I decided to find out for myself. Really a nice reel and if it doesn't last 50 yrs like my old 5000, what the heck, I could come up with another $40!

Point is if you see something that appeals to you, pick it up and spin the handle. If it's well within your price range, get it. Like to refer this to a very famous dog. Pointer rotting away in a kennel. Guy came along and saw him and just something he liked about the dog. Took it out and turned it loose and the breeder was appalled, he had it marked for termination, but the guy still saw something he liked and didn't know what so he got the dog. If you know anything about pointer's and even some that don't, Guard Rail became a house hold name, one of the greatest that ever lived but only after a guy came along and gave him a chance!

It just hit me. I might actually have a use for one of my level winds. Have the Daiwa on a Kokanee rod, very light action. Was thinking of maybe trying it this year. Well lot's of time's I see crappie under the boat and there's depth readout's on the finder. Seldom ever do any good on them but no idea how much line I have out. Next trip after them gonna take it along and try it out jigging!
