Alot of it has to do with the terrain you fish, down here we fish HEAVY COVER,spinning does not have the power the new baitcasters have to get these fish out without wrapping, might be fine for drop shotting a worm or float and fly on some bald point in a deep clear lake,on second thought naaah take me home
Hey Tom Mann used to use spinning gear heavy duty for fishing in cover and he used to drag them right out and he didn't have any problems.

good for Tom Mann, question, what do you use?
I only fish spinning gear. I used baitcasters and i just got fed up with the birds nests and backlash. Yes i got good enough for where it didnt happen much but when it did it just ruined the fun of fishing to stop and get it out. Then when you couldnt get it out to cut it. Trust me spinning gear has all the power to pull fish out of heavy cover. Every year a family member of mine takes me to a fishing club hes in and we go fishing for about 4 hours for two days. We could get on the water and cast around 8 am and leave by 12 pm. This year over those two days we caught about 120 bass. These bass were not small etheir i got four 5+ pound bass. Alot of 3 pounders, a few four pounders, a ton of 2pounders, then a decent amount of 1 pound and less, and i'll tell you these fish went into to cover i had tons of fish go into deep lillys and i could work them out of them easy. I can do everything on a spinning rod i can with a bait caster and less problems. I will gover take out my baitcaster every now and then but mostly i dont use it much.
tarpon are landed on spincast gear. its all about matching your rod reel line and lure to the conditions and size fish your after. dont bass fish with a micro spin outfit and dont use a curado baitcaster to tarpon fish with.
baitcaster all the way
If you can't fish with the big boys, keep it on the trailor
If you are jig fishing in heavy cover, a bait caster is what I use. It works more like a winch and can pull much better than a spinning reel. I also use it for different applications but the spinning reel can also be used most other types, ie. crank bait, ect...
I still use the bait caster most of the time. When fishing tourneys, I have about 8-10 rods with everything set-up. I like the Pflueger President in spinning.

Hi All
This is a good thread and thought I would add my 2 cents worth.
Started as a kid with bait caster (no spin or spin cast in those days, from a home made fly rod from a light cane pole .. paper clips for snake guides, coat hanger wire bent into a line holder) ... just before I went in AF they came out with the Airex spining reel ... did not get to use and while I was out of touch with my fishin for 4 years the Mitchell 300 took over and for several years that was all I used . 6 # line and all kinds of lures 6 1/2' Conolin Fiberglass Rod Still have the reel ... and then I found the 5000 Ambassador .. Back to bait casters and since then I have really found the different bait caster combos for the job ... the main reason I like the bait caster is .... Accuracy .. you can't catch him if you don't put it in front of him ... I also like the fact that I cast Right Handed and trading hands saves a lot of fatigue on the one hand for cast & retrive of a spinning reel (if some one can change hands with a spinning reel and not make a mess of their line .. my hat is off to you) I have bait casters set up so that I can cast a lure as light as 3/16 th ... with 12# line and others set up for heavier weight lures. This applies to my Bass Fishing (Speck Trout & Redfish as well) for my Bluegill and Crappie I like my spinning out fit but because of the fatigue factor I am using spin cast ... change of hands again.
Just a few words for what it is worth.

I think both baitcasters and spinning outfits have their place. For some reason I have problems casting a long Carolina rig, and prefer to use a spinning outfit. For Texas rigged worms, I'd rather use a baitcaster. The old spincast outfits have their place, too. I have one of the Zebco 808 Boss Hawg combos I bought this spring, I pulled a 5 lb. largemouth out of a willow tree in a pond with it using 25 lb. test line. However, the Boss Hawg doesn't cast very well for distance.
I'm new but it was explained like this to me:
Baitcasters are for accuracy but require more skill to use well. They are more accurate because a skilled angler can land the bait on spot with a baitcaster where it's harder with other reel types.
