Default Black Widow C&C Rod Holder Mods

    Hi All,

I have a set of Capps and Coleman Black Widow single rod holders and have had some issues with them. I have heard that there were some mods that a few folks made to the holders themselves with some welds in specific areas. Does anyone have any pics or specific instructions where to place the welds to fix them?

I like the holders, but they at least for me seem to not lock down very well and end up falling over quite a bit if you hit a snag etc. I've spoke to others that don't really have the same issues with them, but they've almost become unusable at this point for us. Would like to fix them and continue using or may have to look at a set of the stalkers.

    Thanks for the advice.

I’ve got a fix for the upper part where you don’t have to weld them. As far as them not getting tight at the ball mount, you may have the older sets that did have issues there. All of that has been fixed now, but if you have the ones from 2-3 years ago the tolerances were way off and they’ll never get any better. Contact Tite Lok and they will help you with some of the newer ball mounts.

I just do not understand having to work on 90 dollar rod holders, each I might add, just does not make sense. 700 bucks in holders and they have to me modified, why aren't they modified before they are offered to the public.

Tried a set. Keeping everything adjusted properly keeps you busier than a one-armed paper hanger.

I totally agree with Rees, if you bought them for cheap would be one thing but when you pay top $$ and think about having to work on them ?????????

The new ones aren’t bad. They had a manufacturing defect from one of their vendors and shipped them out before they realized it on the older ones. No different that a recall on your 60k truck. Stuff happens that’s out of your control sometimes. Best in the business when they’re right tho. 10x better than a T-Bar setup.

Same thing with fish finders. Pay 1500 for a good unit (usually X’s 2 to network them). Have to buy a heading sensor (250) and a switch box (250) to keep it from going in a donut below .6 mph. Then you buy a card (150 x 2) to see the contours. Dongles (30 each) Ethernet cables at 35-75 each, etc, etc, etc. I can fix the rod holders in about 30 minutes for $1.50. The new ball mount on the Tite Lok is bullet proof now. No issues whatsoever. The rod holder for a troller is where the rubber meets the road!!!!! Without them, you ain’t catching fish. I want the best out there for that, and I’m willing to spend 30 minutes and a 1.50 to have them.

If you still need help with your holders, please feel free to contact me. Regardless of where you bought them, I’ll do my very best to help you with them and get them fixed. I’ll even be happy to contact Tite Lok for you if anything needs replacing. They are aware of this issue and are glad to help people out. Im just trickled that the problem has been resolved because they are By Far the best rod holders on the market when they are fixed properly.

Thanks BRM! I really appreciate the offer to help and the insight into the new design. I've reached out to them to see if they will offer to replace them with the new design. I'm hopeful they will assist. When I first got the set several years ago I had two that wouldn't stay put, I called them and they sent replacement bases without hesitation. Great customer service! Unfortunately, the replacements still had the issues. I'm really glad to hear about the new design, I wasn't aware of that. Hopefully, they will replace them and we can continue to enjoy them.

I can help you out with them. Be happy to. I have the right phone number to talk to them. Lol

The ones you have are the bad ones. They replaced them with the same batch of ball mounts. That’s all they had at that point. They lost millions taking care of their customers and did it with a smile. It would have killed a lesser company.

The tolerances were waaaay off on the ball adjuster and most of them wouldn’t get tight enough to hold the ball properly. The vendor that made those has been replaced to say the least. Lol

Could you share the right number to talk to them? 4 of the 8 I bought 2 years ago have the same issue and I cannot get them on the phone with the number I have. Any help would be appreciated.
