Default Night fishing JONAH

In the past I have tried to night fish on Greeson. No luck. I have been invited to some of Gooch's night stalks on Ouachita. No luck. I know there are those out there that exclusively night fish or stalk and have great success. I particularly don't relish the idea that I can't do it or that I'm a Jonah for this type of crappie fishing. Any ideas or thoughts?

Darryl,

Been a long time ago, but I did some night fishing at De Gray and Conway. Would just go out and put a Coleman lantern hangin off a tree limb in standing timber. Go back about a hour later and fish under it with a minnow and just wait.

On Beaver is is just as easy to locate a lighted boat dock and load up either using minnows or black/blue, black green curl tails. Size can be an issue some time. The keeper to non keeprer ratio is usualy 10-1.

Did we not catch a crappie that almost went on the wall and the biggest bigun pic of the year on that trip. If you throw in the 2500 calories of food and a bed under the stars thats a heck of a trip.

Come to think of it we need to do another one soon.

Hey Darryl,

I'm new to this forum, but I plan to head out of Denby (on Ouachita) tonight. We'll see what happens with the water bein' down 2 feet from full pool.

Whether I catch 'em or not will not keep me from havin' a great time under the stars. I'll let you know.

The night trip outta Denby netted only two fish; trolling 300's down the south bank and into Twin Creeks. Set up two lights for two hours and nary a nibble.

The lake was like glass and the moon, she was-a blazin'. I trolled back across the big water half way to Denby with the bandits and 1/8 oz road runners tiped ith minnows. No go, but a great trip anyway. Some things money can't buy.

Fired up the big motor and trailered at 0230 am. Next time, I'll go down lake. Maybe I'll find 'em then.

Thanks for the report John. Deep Thoughts and I fish the lower end of the lake and have had limited success on our stalks as well. We do catch some huge fish and a large variety as well but we just dont load the cooler like we like to.

We are heading out for our next stalk the first weekend in August and will keep you posted on our success.

Here are a few from the catch on the last trip. Gooch caught that green carp with his ice fishing rod which was shorter than the fish. It was a hot windless night with a storm threat. We fished at least 3 different spots and did some trolling too. The crappie were caught in 22-25ft at about 15 or deeper.

Hey Darryl, hope you get to go at night again soon, if you need some pointers, just ask Gooch.

It is not like it was when Daddy used to take me fishin' here. I grew up in Benton and always considered it the ultimate to crappie fish Ouachita. Son, we loaded up on the slabs all the time. Many times we filled the old metal Coca Cola ice chests full of crappie.

Now, I consider myself really lucky to get a near limit any time of the year other than during the spawn...and THAT hasn't happened in a long time. Maybe next spawn will be better than this past one for us all.

I plan to do a little stalkin' Friday night and plan to put in at the spillway. I'll have to set my drags a little looser or I'll likely get broke off by a striper in those waters. I'll let you know the result fer sur.
