If your not using a fish finder then set your poles at different depths and let the fish tell you. Once you see a pattern on a certain pole then match your other poles to that one and wear them out. Good luck.
I am kinda new to this trolling thing and the more I go the more questions I have. I trolled last Sat in about 12 feet of water and run the poles about 10 feet deep. I didn't catch much (1) but I really felt like the fish were there. So I raced home after work yesterday trolled the same spot but run the poles only 3 to 5 feet deep and caught 12 in 1.5 hours. What strategy you guys use to figure out how deep to run the baits while trolling? Any rules of thumb?

Yep...what Yikes said!!! During the dog days of Summer look for the thermocline!
I agree with above advice....
Hey guys, how do you find the thermocline?
That was a good one! Anymore info on the sensitivity setting? This is completely new to me. I plan to start trying the trolling thing since I missed the spawn.

Just turn it up to 80 percent maybe (someone else may help here) you will be able to see a line across your screen say 16 feet deep or however deep the thermocline is on your lake.
80 is a good starting point. Keep in mind that it takes a while for it form and even longer to get pronounced. Periods of rain and high winds can "thin" it out and even remove it. If you don't see it at 80 and you know it's there, just keep increasing the sensitivity until you do, might have to turn the noise filter down as well. Once you find it, that's where it will be until something changes as far as the weather goes.

A lot like the old Wannabe... except with fewer bad words. And Karate chop action. But, yes, still purtier than you.
B. Good one Rip-a-lip! What kinda of finder do you have and what sensitivity level?
