    Default how to jig?

Hi, I have been catching crappie for years now but only off of minnows. However I have been trying my hotspot for weeks now and only catch about 3 or 4 with a bobber & minnow. LAst night a guy I always see fishing at the spot has a WHOLE float basketful of slabs. I asked what time to catch them and he said all day, you just have to use jigs and not minnows. We fish off of a concrete pier with a chain link fence that has rod holders welded onto it. It has about a 20 foot drop and the water deepness varies.

The problem is...I don't know how to use jigs. How would you jig to catch crappie off this pier? I didn't want to look stupid by saying I didn't know how to use jigs. Please help and be as specific as possible. What type of jigs should I buy? Do I cast them & reel or drop them to the bottom & reel up?

Hey Crapzilla, welcome aboard. I fish only with jigs. Both ways you mentioned will work. You can cast out, let it sink some and retrieve. You can drop straight down and then reel it up. You can cast it out , let it sink to the bottom and then hop it up and down as you bring it in. You can drop it straight down to a certain depth and then move it up and down with your rod. Sometimes you can even drop it straight down to a depth, leave it there and do nothing. The main thing to remember is that you have to try different things until you find out what the fish wants.

As for what type of jig the choice is up to you. I use solid plastic jig bodies that I make on an unpainted jig. Some people like plastic and some like hair jigs. The best thing is to try both and see which one you prefer.

That is the advice that I can give and I am sure that you will get advice from the other fine folks here. Then you can try it all and see what works for you. I hope I have been some help.
To make life enjoyable, you must have crappie days.

Float the jig under the bobber. Pretend it is a minner.

Bobbers ils not for me and I only use jigs vertical only not good in very deep water I'm a shallow water guy 8-10 max. Tubes and Paddle Bugs are my favorites I'm not caught up in the millions of colors but do keep different color Majic markers. Blue and white , green, White is my favorite can't go wrong with while and silver mix bpo has good jigs and reasonable always use hi vis gold by stren. Don't over work the jig, you can't hold it still no matter how hard you try. The Thump is what I live for and never spider rig . you must stay with it and now is the time for spawn so it'll get easy to learn now vs winter or summer. LOVE THE THUMP

Bobbers work fine. Fish don't care if the jig is tied to a bobber or to a nut. I float jigs a lot because I am too lazy to put a boat in the water. I don't care what color the jig is as long as it is chartreuse. I ain't no expert on nothin, but I can catch a dumb fish.

I pretty much agree with all that rocket rich said except for the depth. My last to outings I was catching fish 27 to 36 ft down with jigs.

Be cautious of the thump addiction I'm told this addiction is very similar to crack cocaine except your teeth won't rot out from the thump addiction. :D

crapzilla, I bet if you was to ask that guy who was doing all the catching he would be glad to give you a demonstration to help you out. Most Crappie fishermen will give you a hand, ain't no such a thing as a dumb question, but unfortunately there are smart aleck replies from some individuals. Good luck and try what Tom (Cane Pole) was telling you about the bobber at the same depth you would fish your minnows. Ferdi aka Fred
