Default I have got a sad little girl

I ran over my granddaughters squirrel dog puppy yesterday morning. We had been working Star who had just turned 3 months old teaching her to leading and walking her around in the woods. We took Star to the vet when my granddaughter got out of school. I had crushed her pelvis, her growth bone and broken the hip and bone where it connects to the socket. The vet did x-rays and came out with the bad news. Star needed to go to a specialist if I could find one who would take her, with no guarantee anyone could help her. But the vet said, she MIGHT be able to take the socket out for ($892.00) but did not believe that Star would ever walk again….she would probably end up dragging her rear end around. We discussed it, with her being a hunting dog, why put her through that misery all her life. We made the decision to euthanize Star. My granddaughter was crying and hugging the vet, my wife was crying, the vet was crying, the vet assistant was crying. It was a horrible day for all of us. During the ride back home, with my granddaughter holding Star’s collar crying, I called my friend who we had gotten Star from. He still had a littermate sister and brother and Skylar could have her pick. I asked Skylar if she wanted another puppy so soon, and of course, she did. We went by to look at them and Skylar could not make her mind up for another female or male…so my friend said take them both and I’ll come get the other one when Skylar makes up her mind. Skylar was excited this morning, said she was going to give her babies a bath when she got home from school. Thanks Crappie.com for letting me get this off my chest.

Thats so said poppop.Thank god you let that baby get another puppy to help her with her grief.I know it was a total freak accident that you ran over the puppy.
But on other hand,it was the best thing for the puppy to have him put down.
    Your such a great papaw.

Thanks for sharing pop. It is a sad story as we have all had something similar happen with a pet. My twins are now 9, and my youngest is 6. It might be bad in somes eyes, but I have never hidden things from them on what has happend to one of the pets. I feel that a pets passing can be used to help children understand about death. I would hate to shelter them from such things. I don't want to have to tell them someday, that Grandma ran away. Thanks

That's a sad story poppop.....I'm sorry for your granddaughter's and your loss, but it sounds like you did the right thing.....my guess is you end up keeping both dogs.

Tough deal for you buddy. Hopefully she picks one or the other of the puppies or you could end up with both.

Sorry you had to put the pup down and it's hard as hell to do it, when my labs time comes I'm gonna be balling like a baby.

Better take the time to give 'em both good names cause I'm thinking you gonna be raising both pups.
Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.

How sad Pop. The pain of hurting the puppy is bad enough, but to see someone you love hurt and feel so helpless is so much worse.
Your granddaughter has a gift that in years to come will become more priceless than you can ever imagine. I wish my own PawPaw had lived long enough to be what you are to her.
I hope you both get to spend a lot of time training and loving the newly aquired pup(s). Don't forget to train them to sniff out the good crappie holes!

sorry to here that pop. my oldest girl ( 13 ) just loves animals, dogs especially, but she is very allergic to animal hair. maybe later on going to check about shots she can get. i don't know what it feels like to lose a pet that a child has, but i do know what it feels like to have my girl cry on my shoulder because she can't even pet one... one day she will, i'm claiming it...

    Tears makes the heart stronger
So sad for the young pup, but the right choices were made...You now have 2 pups and a bigger heart for doing what any grandparent would do.....
