I change my truck oil every 5000 miles. That is the recommended milage in the owners manual. Several oil change "experts" say I need to change my oil every 3000 miles? Why? Manual says 5000. Sure sounds like a rip and a waste of oil resources if it is not necessary to change oil that often. Something ain't right.

So we can use more oil Tom,to give them another reason to raise it up somemore is all I can figure.
I run into that with the cars. Dealers always say 3000 mile oil change- I always say do what the manual says. I tell them if they want more money just raise the price but don't waste the oil. :D
Always go by the manual.

I am a little confused with this myself. I bought a 2007 Ram1500 pickup and the manual says to change the oil every 5,000 miles. But in order for the warranty to be good it says that you must change the oil every 3,000 miles. It just does not make sense. I always change the oil every 3,000 miles in all my cars so that is not a problem. You would just think that the manufacturer could make up their mind.
To make life enjoyable, you must have crappie days.
I had a Silverado with oil change alert and it constantly came on between 12000 and 15000 miles. I did not wait that long but dealership said I could have as the computer monitors drivingg habits and such. I think it is just another way for the mechanics and oil co to make more money.
i have ha d very good service changing my oil every 3000 miles. in the past i have gotten 350,000 out of one of my dodge trucks, 250,000+ out of a ford truck and a lot of those miles were pulling my boat. i might have gotten the same life out of them if i had changed at 5000 miles but i dont know. ooh yea and when i got ride of those 2 high mileage trucks they were still running. no motor or transmission repairs is well worth the extra cost of the oil changes to me. i think i could pay for all my oil changes with the cost of 1 motor or transmission repair.
I recall someone telling me the manufactures will use the larger miles between oil changes so that the caculated operating expenses will be lower for that vehicle.

Newer engines and newer oil technology make it so you don't have to change the oil as often. An older engine I would still go every 3K miles. And if you use a synthetic oil you can go even longer. That graphite stuff is supposed to last a very long time.
