what is the spring for?

i bought a new vice for tying and it has a little spring on it just below the clamp that holds the hook. can anyont tell me what it is for?

you use it to hold your thread out of the way. For instance if you wanted to do a little trimming before tying off, take your bobbin over to the spring and lay the thread in it to hold it out of the way.
