Prop hub slipping or the prop is too small would be my guesses.
My rpm warning alarm sounded off (over 6000 rpm) on my last trip out with my 4 stroke Mercury ,have any of you had this happen. It was wide open when it was doing it and as soon as I backed down the throttle a bit it went off and was fine,it has never done this before.I am going to take it to the dealer tommorrow to see what is going on and figured I'd post this and maybe get a heads up on what might be wrong.

If you were loaded light and the air is still extra cool, it COULD mean
that you are just propped about right...
My Yamaha will bump the rev limiter on a cold morning if my livewells
are empty and there's a good chop - my rig will turn more r's then
than it will on flat, calm water.
But any other time it will only pull 5900-6000.
I'd rather just back off a little in those conditons (it's usually too cold
to be running wide-open anyway) than go up on pitch and lose holeshot.

The only time mine has gone off was when I had it trimed to high.
