We just bought two Shimano Spirex 1000RE's to hang off of our 9' Jigging rods. Prior to that we were using (and still use them on our backup rods) Shimano Spirex 2000RD's. They also double as our walleye reels when in Canada. The 2000's are a bit big for crappie fishing, but work ok. They just waste a lot of line on the spool.

    Hope that helps....

I do. This way I can switch up to any other style of fishing. I think either way is fine.

Cabela's Depthmaster II - on sale for $29.95

I just picked up my first "long crappie rods," a 10' and 14'. I intend to use Zebco Depth Locater reels on them.

    $19.95 at Bass Pro Shop

I have several of the Shimano 2000's. They are great reels and you can't beat the price.

I like the Shimano Siennas for longlining, they hold plenty of line. I also like spinning reels for spiderrigging as they are easy to set and conrtol depth.

I use spinning reals. However, make sure the real fits good with your rod holder system assuming that you have one. By fit i mean that when your rod is in the holder u need to be able to real up line while it is the holder. make sure the handle does not hit the rod holder as you turn it. I have a couple that are close (i made this mistake) and its a little aggravating. I think if u stay with 2000 series are lower you will be ok. If you go baitcaster for spider rigging i would stay with something low profile and lite. Make sure you have instant antireverse on any real u buy
