    Default My First Victory Garden

Well I wasn't alive when America had the first go round but I've started mine and the great thing about it is it takes no gas to make it run...Or at least they hadn't taxed it yet.

I'm using 55 gal plastic drums, turned on the side and cut in half. Then filled with rich earth and worked from there.

Good for you Rick, I've been growing vegies forever it seems. I like your idea just be sure you have enough drainage holes in the bottom, you don't want soggy soil. Another thing to watch for is the lack of water, containers tend to dry out fast. I just broke some new ground on a 20' X 35' patch. My favorates are snap beans, you know "zydecos", just planted them Friday. When they will be finished I will plant okra and when I have enough of them in the freezer to make gumbo for all of next winter I will cut them down and replant "zydecos" in the fall for a second crop. Of course I've got tomatoes and cukes too.

Paw Paw why do ya call snap beans zydecos? :p I hear ya about the okra
for cooking, I do the same. I ain't a survivalist or anything but I have always had a gut feeling that knowing yur way around around a gun, fishing gear, and puttin up food are skills that may one day come in handy. The state the world and our country is in I think so now more than ever.
