Can i burn synthetic 2 stroke oil in my 83 Mariner/yamaha/merc 40 horse? i dont want to burn it up but i like the idea of smokless or nearly smokeless

Did not know synthetic would reduce smoke,will ask marine mech what he thinks.

I think you should wait and get a response from Jerry Blake or Darryl Morris. I don't remember which one had the experience but, he burned up a motor by switching oils.

I had a 83 Merc 150 I switch to synthetics with and didn't really notice that much difference with the smoke.

I use it with good results. You are not going to see a huge difference in smoke in a "premix" motor. You will in a "self-mixer" but then I recomend any self-oiling system be disabled and the motor run premixed. I have seen significant reduction in evidence of friction wear in the cylinders. I use Penzoil 100% synthetic. One draw back is the oil does not protect the steel parts inside as well if the motor is used infrequently. Jim.
