    Default Another Barometric Pressure Thread!

I just picked up a MinnKota fishing barometer for the h*ll of it...maybe it can help tell me why sometimes we fill coolers in a few hours of nightstalking and sometimes get close to skunked.

THIS unit indicates "better" fishing with a rising barometer trend

    AND Poor fishing 29.2 to 29.8, Good 29.8 to 30.2, Average 30.2 to 30.8

This seems contrary to what I have been led to beleive: fish a steady to falling barometer (as if a front is coming) when the pressure isn't too high (as what happens for a few days after a strong cold front and a High builds.

    What y'all think?

P.S. just bought a LED Aurora green light to try, hopefully will get it going Thursday night. I turned it on in the garage for a minute and it doesn't seem to brighten up the garage as much as a Green Magnet 48" light, BUT, you can stand 30 feet away and it hurts/burns your retinas looking directly at it while you can stare at a Green Magnet all night long. Interesting. I will see what it looks like in the water.

Are you sure you are looking at the spread with the right frame of mind ... seems you may be looking from the "poor" fishing standpoint, as the "norm" :p

The barometer readings are correct, as far as their "indications" of the potential for fishing success. But, look at it from the standpoint of "average" ... towards poor (falling barometer). It's kind of like the argument of "glass half empty vs glass half full" ... it's the perspective of the person looking, that tells the tale.
Fast rising or fast falling barometer changes are usually not good fishing indications ... steady to slow rise/fall changes are. All the barometric pressure reading can tell you is weather pattern changes ... how the fish react to those changes is still being debated :D

I'd love to see some results for an extended period of time under various conditions.

I've been monitoring the barometric pressure while fishing this year (I got me an expensive watch with lots of fancy info on it) problem is it's just about always 30.05 and pretty steady everytime I go fishing. We are well below our average rain fall amounts. I've yet to go fishing this year when it wasn't at or near 30.05 so I havn't really learned anything yet.

My wife has a ‘weather ball’ in the living room. A clear glass ball with a tube on the side leading to a smaller ball on top. Filled with light blue water. The water moves up and down the tube as the pressure changes. When the small upper ball gets water in it I declare it’s fishing time!

Can’t say as it predicts good fishing but it gives her a visual of what I’d like to be doing!

I noticed that too. I asked the sales lady why the differences and she blew smoke up my tailpipe. All of them at Wal Mart were made in China. Go figure.

Poor fishing 29.2 to 29.8, Good 29.8 to 30.2, Average 30.2 to 30.8 Old salty sailor saying: Fish are plenty at 1020. I looked the 1020 (millibars) and if I remember that number falls in the average range above.

I watch the weather channel myself. Easier than trying to remember to read\record a barometer.

All those Minn-Kota barometers have to be set. On the back side of them is a dial to set the sea level. That has to be set before it can give you an acurate reading. I have one in my boat, but the only reason I keep one is to tell me if a storm is coming in pretty quick. I have caught fish when the barometer says the fishing is poor and I have got skunked when it says the fishing is good. Go figure! My oppinion is the fishing will be pretty good as long as the barometer is steady or very slowly moving one way or the other.
