Default Yes people actually eat drum.

YUCK! I have heard people eat these boney creatures. This one had to be in the 13-19 pound range. Felt like a sack of potatoes on my 4lb. mono line. Notice the 10" crappie on the stringer in relation to the drum.

Did't know they was boney, but think the meat is rubbery. Have you ever cut out the ear bones for a trophy? When I was a kid I had a small bag full of them. They might make jewelry. :D

The bones are called otoliths and fisheries biologists can age fish using them. They can slice them and count the rings to get an age of even Crappies.

You're exactly right. Same Family/class of "rough" fish.

I heard a good way to cook them. Get a board and put all your spices on it, the more the better. Lay the goo (that's what we call them) on the board and cook it for 4hours at 375 degrees in the oven. Carefully pull it out, throw the goo (drum) out in the yard and then eat the BOARD!!

Hey Mo'nBack, You had me going at first then I read into it more. That made my day.
But I agree the board would probably taste better.

Like anything, if it is prepared right it is very good. The biggest draw back all of the bones. I have eaten it on several occasions and it is very good, but I don't have a clue how to cook it myself.

The fresh water Drum should not be confused with the salt water Black Drum, or Red Drum (Redfish), both of which are EXCELLENT eating...
