    Default a real quick question

Ive got a lot of great advice here and I love it, But my question is this Ive read all the threads about live well vs stringer vs ice chest and my question is this do you kill them before they go in the ice? Ive always just put them in there alive is that wrong? thanks for the help. by the way they started biting hard today in central illinois, crappie magazine said right off the bank and I hit 3, 1 pounders in 15 min. this morning. thanks again.-Joel

I just toss em right on the ice right off the hook into the cooler.

Just toss 'em right on the ice. If you decide to get one mounted wrap it in a wet towel before putting it on ice so it won't lose any scales or damage any fins. I also believe that they fillet a little easier as the meat is a little firmer.

I have a friend who keeps a short bar to thump them on the head before going into the cooler. Says they taste better. Maybe so, I just throw them in. I keep several two liter juice bottles filled with water in the freezer. when I get a few fish, I pull the bottles of ice to the top. This is much cheaper than buying ice. Haven't had a problem yet, and it gets pretty hot here later in the season. If I am going to wait til the next day or so to clean them, I make sure that there is enough ice and water to to keep them cold and wet. Besides they seem to be easier to clean the next day when they are very cold.

Even when using a live well, I'll still put them in a cooler of ice before filleting them. They are easier to clean when cold, the meat is firmer and the fillets come off almost white with no blood in them.

So you just put ice in the cooler, and no water...throw the fish on the ice when you catch 'em?
