Been there done that! To me, it depends on the water temp. I hook them just below the dorsel fin and make sure not to break the spine and they seem to last a pretty good while to me. They may sit a little inactive for a while, but I bet when a big crappie swims by they will get a little more active.

I'll replace an inactive minnow. I don't mind releasing minnows. I just hope a crappie eats it and gets even bigger.

My favorite saying is ( don't put that ugly minnow down there) you will scare the crappies . I know there are times when when that minnow has to look just right and be presented just right..... but in the same breath there are times when its head can be missing , broke in the center, have stickers on its back and hooked though the tail and still catch crappies.

How many times have you thought the minnow was dead and threw him in the lake just to watch him swim off.

    I double hook mine.....
Caught crappie on live ones as well as dead ones....
An old timmer told me when they stop bitting.... squash your minnow.... guess the scent get out better....
Hope that made things clearer for you..........
    Good fishing..............

I leave it on there forever. The deader it is, the more you need to shake it or twitch your line.
