    Default An Old Adage

When the dogwoods and redbuds bloom in your part of the country, those male crappie have a harmone surge that dresses them in their tuxedos as they prepare for the ball.

When the water temp hits around 53 or so they seem to start getting dark.

When the water gets warmer they will turn dark in the neck and throat. Some say the white crappie don't do it, but yes they do, may not as much as the black crappie, but they do turn.

Like what Jerry says, "putt'in on the tuxedos to court the ladies."

Fished Wolf lake outside Yazoo City, Ms. Water temp was 59 degrees on my depth finder. All the fish I caught were silver. Does that mean they were all girls?

It happens before they go to the banks. The fish I caught friday had not turned . The water temps were 51 and little higher in some areas. It won't be long if the water temps keep rising.:D

Yes sir the temps are creeping up. We just need more water here in Mississippi. Got a rain last night, but we need a three inch rain to put enough water in the lake.

Talking THIS time of year (pre-spawn)

Male Black Crappie, in some areas of the country, will get almost completely black, just prior to moving shallow in search of bedding spots. But, most of them will, at least, get larger and darker black markings.
Female Black Crappie will get darker black blotches, but retain most of their other normal coloration.
Female White Crappie will look the same as they always do, with the exception of the bulging belly :p .
Male White Crappie will get darker black coloration, especially on fins/tail, but retain the "saddle stripe" marking configuration. This is one reason why some people confuse male White Crappie with Black Crappie, at this time of year

Crappie lose a lot of their coloration, when in deep water, or when they are in very stained/murky waters ... they don't need/want to be seen. When in clearer water, or shallow, their coloration may be darker ... this is their camo suit, so they can blend in with the background and shadows. But, when spawning season is gearing up ... the males want to be seen, dressed in their finest, so as to attract as many females as possible
