What size and brand of line are you using?
I started using Shakespeare's new Ultralight ALPHA20 Spinning Reels on my 11' Sam Heaton Signature Series Jig Poles recently and I'm real happy with the little jewels. I've landed two stripers - one just under and one just over 13-pounds - and several white bass up to 3.3-pounds recently and for inexpensive little reels they performed very well. They are really light at 5.1-ounce, which makes them nice for all-day pole-in-hand-fishing.

I'm using 6-pound Premium Ande Envy (high vis green) on my jigging poles. Both of those stripers had inhaled my jig so their chicken teeth were working on the line pretty good while I played them. Ande is some tough line. I did have to retie after landing those stripers because when I gave a tug on my jig to check the line and knot it broke fairly easily both times.
