Don't fish many pads around here anymore. Used to fish them a bunch green carp fishing pads and weeds. Brade works good because it will cut right through the stem. I would say you would be good say with a 20/8 or 25/10 diameter. Most of mine is 12/4 and only broke off a couple of times on hard hangups.

We fished for Oscars in the Fla. Everglades last year and I was breaking off a bunch of fish in the pads. It felt like a 5# Bream when they hit. Luckily, I had a spare spool with 14# braid and it saved the day. I had to switch to small bait holder hooks, they destroyed a crappie hook after a couple of fish. We were using crickets under a cork.
