Black Stripe?

Middle of April fishing the Spring river in NE Oklahoma we got a chance to do some Crappie fishin'. Had some good ones, one white around 14.5". On the second day we caught a few (what looked to be white females.) They all had a prominent black stripe along the whole dorsal from snout to dorsal fin. Anyone seen something similar. I usually fish east central Nebraska where I encounter mostly blacks. Is this stripe prominent in whites. Just curious or did we catch some odd ball fish? Didn't get any photos to post.

We call them Magnolias down here, caught one about 13 inches long ealier this year and that was big for those.

The black stripe is a genetic trait in certain black crappie. We catch them regularly here. Had a client catch one just shy of 3lbs last year. Never seen or heard of a white crappie with the black stripe. Post up a picture.

I catch a few a year at Eufaula (OK) lake. Black Nose Crappie. Never caught any larger than 12" to 13". I think we have them in many of the lakes in eastern Oklahoma. I've always heard its a slightly different species than the black crappie.

We call 'em black nose crappie and Magnolia crappie in east Texas. They are a hybrid I'm told and not supposed to
reproduce? Supposed to get pretty good sized but I haven't found a big one yet. Somewhere on this site someone
had something to do with distributing them, but I couldn't find the post.

They are not hybrids, they are just black Crappie with a gene that causes the black stripe. Some states stock them and some do not, which is why they are more prominent in certain areas. They do reproduce and the offspring have the same stripe.

We call them black nose also and only a few lake here have them. From what I understand they put up alot better of a fight catching them.
