Default The ain't no Crappies in Australia but......

G'day all. My name is Russ and I am half of the population of Cossack Historic Town on the northwest coast of Australia. I'd never even heard of a crappie before yesterday and happened across this forum while searching for some info about my sounder/plotter. After looking at some of the threads it occurred to me that there are many similarities between Crappie fishing and the kind of fishing that I do, so I thought it would be worthwhile joining the forum.

Thanks for having me and "tight lines" to you all.

    Cheers

    Russ

Nice to meet you. What type of fishing you have going on down there?

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

    G'day again

I fish tidal creeks, usually from my kayak. The species that I target favour hiding in the roots of the mangrove trees that line the creeks, ambushing prey that swims past. These same fish also favour entire mangrove trees that have washed into the river and end up submerged in the channels. Structure is everything. I mostly use lures, but will occasionally use a live bait if the fishing is slow. I fish with light spinning and baitcasting tackle between two pounds and twelve pounds depending on the species I am after.

We get the legendary Barramundi in these creeks and the fish can grow to over a metre in length and weigh in at around twenty pounds. They pull like freight trains and 12 lb is as light as you can go and still expect to stop one of these brutes before they take you into the snags.

Most of the guys in this area fish with "skull dragging" gear (30 lb line and 60 lb leader) but it's just not my thing.

Other species that I like catching are Mangrove Jack, Black and Yellowfin Bream, Javelin Fish, Estuary Cod and Flathead.

I usually like to keep one or two fish per day out and release the rest. I pretty well release every Barramundi that I catch as they don't appeal to me as a culinary species. I have just purchased a new waterproof camera and look forward to photographing and filming my exploits in the future.

    Thanks, all, for the welcome.

    Russ
