Default Dangerous Sandbars can be Deadly

Sandbar safety, With the 4th upon us this may be helpful as we're out enjoying the hot weather.

A friend of mine went under water for half a block when the edge of a sand bar unexpectedly broke off under his weight. It threw him into current and he was lucky to touch bottom so he knew which way was up. He thought he was done for.

They warn people every year about the dangers of swimming in larger rivers.

I don't fish rivers much, but I certainly wouldn't have thought this could happen. Thanks for the heads up! I had some hairy moments back in the day surfing, and I can certify that it's not fun being trapped under water!

I am on the Mississippi River a lot and one rule of thumb is to not get on a "fresh" sandbar. If it is barely out of the water (only a foot tall or so) stay off of it. We have had them collapse in the middle of the sandbar here due to the river flowing under it.

i fish the red river quite a lot..when the river is on the rise and running swift...always be very very careful..the water will go obver the jetties and create new sandbars that wasnt there before the water rose....unless iam in the middle of the river i never go over a little above idle.......
