Lotech Joe,that the way. I first cast until they stop bitting, then get over them and drop bait to their depth, sometimes I jiggle it andsometimes just hold bait still, sometimes a mixture of both, fish will let you know how they want it.
What's your favorite method for jig fishing. I'm fairly new to crappie fishing, and I'm jigging for answers. I've been tying flies for fly fishing for several years, so I'll be mostly tying my own jigs. My approach so far is going to be to cast & retrieve to locate. Then once located, to vertical jig directly over them or fish under a bobber. What say all? Am I all wet in my thinking? What's your favorite method for jigging for crappies?
Where you go is less important than how you take the steps.

I've been using Charlie Brewer's "do nothing" method for the past 35 years. It works so well, I rarely do anything else. I'll PM you some details.
In his video on the "do nothing" method he talks about keeping the bait in contact with the bottom for bass. I've always counted mine down to the depth I want and then slow swim it back to the boat for Crappie. How do you do it?

Takeum Jigs
Depending on time of year, i have multiple ways i present jigs to them. Right now, it's jig and bobber, followed by the countdown method. For deep stumps, nothing beats my hang gliding technique. Hope to do a short video before the ice comes.
Whether shooting docks or cast/retrieve ... I basically swim the jig back, with a slow & constant retrieve that's slow/fast enough to allow the jig to get to the desired depth ... whether that requires slowing down my retrieve or allowing the jig to fall to a specific depth before retrieving (countdown method). Once a spot has been covered from all available angles, and depth ranges, then I get over top of the spot (if possible) & "Vertical Cast" ( Vertical Casting | Older Articles ) the cover.
... cp
i mainly cast then count down to the depth im marking them on the fishfinder at and reel really slow, no rod tip movement..... if they are deep in submerged cover i use an ul Wally 9ft'er drop it really slowly and do nothing, after 10-20secs i lift 6-12in slowly and drop slowly back down usually the hit is on the fall
