Default Water Boils with Crappie - why?

Just got back from Wis. on fishing trip.

My wife and I often wondered why the water (calm) will sometimes boil with crappies coming to the top? Usually happens early morning or late evening. Are they coming to the top feeding on bugs? They don't seem to want to bite on anything during this time.

What are your experiences with this event and how would you approach catching them during this time? There are hundreds or maybe thousand fish around us sometimes just boiling the water surface.

Thanks for your input and knowledge. Iowafuzz

Are you positive they are Crappie? Sounds more like Shad if they refuse to bite.

I've never seen what I knew was large schools of crappie hitting the surface like that. If it is crappie they must be pushing shad to the top to feed on. I longline troll and can about guarantee that if I pulled thru the schools of fish I'd catch on multiple poles.

Are you sure it is Crappie and not White Bass? That sounds exactly like White Bass feeding on Shad. Are the Sea Gulls around them? EB

Throw a shad lure out there and start reeling in. You'll probably catch something.

Sounds like bass schooling shad. Happens pretty regular on the lakes I fish which is why I always have a bass rod with me! I've never heard of or seen crappie doing that.
