Default 90 wt Gear Oil for Batteries ?

Hey Guys, I was talkin with my uncle and he said that he puts a teaspoon of 90 wt gear oil in each cell of his batteries for his r.v., boats, and cars. He also said he hasnt bought any batteries for 8 years in his boats. He said lubricates the fins of the cells and prevents corrosion that breaks down the batteries. He said its the same thing as the conditioner you buy for batteries. Has anyone heard of this or have you tried it? Being that water and oil dont mix I was just wondering how it works but he said he swear's by it. I just bought 2 new batteries and if this is a "Dont do it type thing" let me know LOL.
I still use one rod at a time!!

Never heard of it before, but that doesn't mean it won't work. This should be interesting to see who have heard of this. EB

I have heard of battery oil. In fact, one of the first batteries used in electric cars (Thomas Edison era) used NiFe (nickel-iron) cells. They had a drain plug on the cells.
Replacing the "oil" charged the battery.

I believe this is what we will see in the near future with electric cars. Drive up and recharge the battery with a "refill".

Here is an article about the refill charge batteries. Those involved in this article were not the first as they claim. Edison, Exide were the first.

do a google on oil in batteries and you'll find back in the day they used mineral oil and one guy put some in his golf cart batteries with no bad effect for 18 months but nothng positive either.

that wasn't filling the battery with oil. it was putting a layer on top of the acid.

After I thought about it, it does sound plausible CP. With an electric car driving across country and running out of juice, it would be quicker to charge the batteries, than plugging it in, and waiting for it to charge up, as what they was talking about. But then you would have the problem of getting rid of the old liquid from the battery. I assume they would recharge the used electrolytes. But that will only work so many times. Food for thought. EB
