    Default Ok, 'nuther crankbait question....

How big is to big for a crappie crankbait? (I am talking about trolling for 1.5 lbs fish and larger) Will the 7cm (or the new 6cm) flicker shad catch bigger crappie vs. the 5cm? Will the 7cm catch fewer smaller fish? I just used the berkley lures as an example, you could apply the question to any brand of lures that come in different lengths/sizes.

If a Crappie can see the bait and they are hungery they will bite it. I have caught Crappie on 1/2 oz Bass Spinerbaits, Bass Crankbaits and Walleye jigs. I have gotten them on a 10 inch worm, and they all weren't big Crappie. I have used the walleye minnows and caught 4 inch Crappie on them. Just because you use a big bait doesn't mean that all the Crappie will be big, but a majority will be bigger fish. EB

I used a 3/8 or 1/4 oz jig this morning that I tied with a white spinnerbait skirt that failed and was still soft, probably silicone. Every bit of 2.5" to 3" and caught lots of fish on it, I was surprised. This thing was heavy and fell fast. Let the fish tell you, still can't beat time on the water for the best teacher.

Crappie will strike any size bait they think they can get down their throats. I've seen reports of members finding some pretty large sized Shad in them. I had a buddy catch a Slab on a 1/2oz Spinnerbait, and I caught one on a 4" plastic Craw. My fishing buddies & I have caught them, albeit much smaller sized fish, on 1/4oz crankbaits (Rebel Wee R, Bomber Flat A, etc). And while they were accidental catches, since we were not fishing for Crappie, it still shows that baits other than jigs & minners will entice Crappie to strike.

I can't attest to the 7cm vs 5cm catching bigger Crappie, or the 7cm catching less small ones .... but, if you're fishing a lake that has numbers of the size fish you seek, and you use the 5cm & 7cm baits in relation to the size of the predominant baitfish (at that time/season), then I would expect you to be able to increase your overall catch rate, even if you don't catch only the 1.5lb & heavier fish.

I'm sure at times a bigger bait means bigger crappie, but I have ran #9 shad raps at the same time as I'm running bandits with no difference in the quality of fish. Catch 6inch crappie on a #9.
